Faun und Nixe

Franz_von_Stuck_006

Frankly, I was looking for sculpture because looking for 20th-century paintings is so hard for me, but then I found this. I do like mythological subjects, and here, the connection between the satyr and the mermaid was so strong that I had to use it. If you’re not up on your classics, the thing about satyrs is that they have, well, satyromania or satyriasis, which means being overly interested in sex. The thing about mermaids is that you’d think that satyrs would therefore not have much use for them. In this case, however, she looks elated–when was the last time she got a shoulderback ride from somebody, you have to wonder? (How can somebody with a mermaid tail get a shoulderback ride from somebody, you might also wonder… but there’s a picture of it, so it must be true!)–and he looks pretty happy too.

Things you gotta love:

her holding onto his horns
his expression
the echoes of the tail and water in color and pattern

I’m not a fan of her hair. His hair is fine, but then I thought Beast was cuter than the prince in the Disney movie Beauty and the Beast.
